Vintage and Antique Linen Care
Should you be out shopping in antique stores or even garage sales
and happen to stumble upon a lovely vintage duvet cover or piece of antique linen you will want to know how to care
for it.
A Few Tips
It may have a few stains, or some yellowing that comes with age. Sometimes it is possible to
remove these but care must be taken to treat the pieces with a delicate touch. Hand washing is preferable to
machines, even though it takes longer. A washer may damage the fiber and a dryer may dull the sheen of the
fabric.
To get started removing light stains and yellowing, soak the piece in a gentle liquid detergent or
laundry flakes. Soak the piece as long as you can still see the offending areas, even for a day or two if
needed. If you have a tub, that would be great, if the piece is large for this part you may use the washer
tub. When you drain the water, use the gentle spin for a few revolutions to remove more water. Use your
judgment as to the age of the fabric when using any spin at all to avoid tearing a delicate piece. Then add
more water and rinse as often as needed to get the soap out.
Use The Sun
Gently remove the items placing larger ones on a sheet spread out in the sun, and smaller items can
be rolled up in a towel to remove more moisture and then spread out to dry. If you must use a dryer make sure
the piece is completely clean and rinsed well. Use a low setting and take it out while still slightly
damp.
Larger pieces should then be ironed until completely dry, left out to make sure all dampness is
removed. They will then be ready to use and will bring you enjoyment for many years.
Store Them Safely
If they are to be stored, they should then be folded or rolled carefully and wrapped in acid-free
paper and placed in an acid-free cardboard box with enough room for air to circulate. Take them out
occasionally and refold so that they will not have permanent creases in them. Never put them in plastic bags
or boxes.
